WE should
develop a keen sense of adventure in life. What
a boring life it would be if we just get to see and do
things out of
routine. If we are clever enough, we know that each day
always offers
us new possibilities, new discoveries and challenges,
etc., all of
which should make our day exciting.
We should avoid
getting trapped in our daily domestic
drudgery, and allow our spirit to fly high and wide, our
mind and
heart to grow in knowledge and love. There will always be
new things
even in the midst of the old and usual things we handle.
It’s a matter
of attitude that in the end would depend
also on the kind of faith or beliefs we have. If we just
believe in
our own powers, if we just depend on the things around,
or on our
feelings, for sure our interests and enthusiasms would
not go very
far. Our mind and heart will slowly grow cold and clammy.
We should not
allow our mind and heart, our attitude and
outlook to be mainly led by our feelings alone or even by
our human
understanding of things. We would be limiting them unduly
that way.
It’s when we
ground ourselves on the solid soil of our
Christian faith that we can always find excitement even
in what may be
considered according to our human estimation as the most
ordinary,
banal and unimportant things in life. We will always feel
some spur,
some impulse to move on with thrill and suspense.
Our faith
always gives meaning and purpose to everything.
It gives us joy and peace in every event and situation in
our life. It
finds beauty even in the ugly things as when we suffer
pain or defeat.
Our faith
provides us with such confidence that even as we
make due preparation for our daily adventure, we also
know that
everything will just turn out right, despite some
possible mistakes
and bad turns along the way.
That’s because
the providence of God never fails to take
care of everything. Even our mistakes can work for the
good, as St.
Paul once said: “We know that in all things God works for
the good of
those who love him, who have been called according to his
purpose.”
(Rom 8,28)
The secret is
to believe in God, to love him, to do his
will, and not to be afraid of any sacrifices or setbacks
involved in
loving him. It’s in this belief and love of God that we
can manage
even to do very extraordinary things, just like Peter
managed to walk
on water, at least for a while, until his faith wavered.
Everyday, we
should make a plan for our spiritual
adventure. We can identify specific aspects, like our
life of prayer,
sacrifice, work, relations with others, etc., as our area
of
adventure.
Then we have to
equip ourselves with the necessary items
and checking on our dispositions so they be attuned to
the thrilling
enterprise.
